It's Saint Nicholas Eve and the geese are on the wing like they are every year at this time.
Flying high from what I can see and hear today. They sound like yapping dogs but filtered.
A few minutes ago, six groups of V formations flew high over the house. So high that when I looked out the window and up, all I could really see were thin, silver threads traveling southeast. The geese are moving fast today. Maybe because it is so cold.
In other years, here in southern Wisconsin, I have watched thousands of geese at a time landing and then picking at the leftovers in farmers' fields like they were making a scheduled pit stop. But today, house-bound, all I can do is listen for them as they fly over. It makes things a bit more exciting around here. A cheap little thrill of noise and motion.
